Hailing from Waco, Texas, Kayla Ray’s upbringing was steeped in the sounds of country music legends like Bob Wills and Tanya Tucker. That sonic DNA resulted in a heartfelt blend of traditional Americana with a modern, albeit sassy, twist.

Kayla’s upcoming album, The World’s Weight, set to debut on June 7th via Real AF Records, is a long-awaited journey through love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. The album’s lead track, “No. 9 Diesel,” is a breezy, yet poignant tale that perfectly encapsulates Ray’s unique sound.

In an interview, Ray described her music as leaning towards the countrypolitan era but with influences from various genres, playfully calling it “Amerikinda.” She shared, “I love the Americana world and what an umbrella it is to the artists who float around genre lines. I really believe my music leans mostly towards the countrypolitan era of country music but, it’s got dabs of all sorts of things I’ve picked up along the way.”

This blend of influences is evident in songs like “Good Old Days,” a wistful ode to the past, and “Likes to Drink Alone,” a poignant reflection on love and loneliness. Ray explained, “‘Likes To Drink Alone’ is about the part of me that still loves you, but also still likes to drink alone. It’s just that I’ve been thinking, maybe I’ve been wrong, and it’s just the fact that leaving has always been easier than staying gone.”

Offstage, Kayla is dedicated to using music as a tool for healing. Currently pursuing a master’s degree in mental health, she has developed a music therapy course for Texas inmates, using music as a means of expression and connection. Reflecting on this experience, Ray shared, “Music is a wonderful vessel for expression, so in my mind, it only makes sense that the two should walk hand in hand.”

Kayla’s music is not just about entertainment; it’s about connection and understanding. Through her songs, she hopes to offer listeners a sense of solace and understanding, reminding us all that we’re not alone in our struggles. As she prepares to release The World’s Weight, Ray’s passion for storytelling and her commitment to authenticity continues to shine through.
