Allisha Gray, a celebrated player and the only returning member from the Tokyo Olympics gold-winning squad, expressed excitement about competing in the upcoming Paris Olympics as part of the USA Basketball 3×3 team. This enthusiasm comes as Gray and her teammates prepare at a prominent tournament held at The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

During the Tokyo Olympics, 3×3 basketball made its debut, where Gray and her team clinched the gold. “It was an incredible experience to be the first to win gold in the sport’s Olympic debut,” Gray remarked. “I’m thrilled to be back and finding my rhythm again.”

Gray is currently teamed up with Dearica Hamby, Cameron Brink, and Linnae Harper, all of whom have contributed significantly to the U.S.’s success in international 3×3 competitions. Brink and Harper were instrumental in the U.S. securing the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup, while Hamby shined in her 3×3 debut at the Women’s AmeriCup last year.

Another U.S. team competing includes Cierra Burdick, Rhyne Howard, Lexie Hull, and Hailey Van Lith, all seasoned athletes with recent international 3×3 successes. Notably, Howard, who is newer to the 3×3 scene, shared her perspective on the game’s unique challenges. “3×3 basketball demands more individual initiative and quick thinking, which really tests your patience and skills,” she explained.

The selection process for the final four-player team for the Paris Olympics is rigorous. The criteria include being among the top ten U.S. players based on points accumulated and having participated in official FIBA 3×3 competitions. Jennifer Rizzotti, the national team coach, acknowledged the difficulty of the selection process. “These athletes have dedicated years and earned significant points to build our program. It’s tough knowing not all can go to Paris, but they all play a crucial role in our team’s dynamics,” Rizzotti stated.

The 3×3 game format features intense, fast-paced action on a half court with a 12-second shot clock, where the first team to score 21 points or lead at the end of a 10-minute game wins. This format has grown in popularity and competitiveness, particularly evident during last May’s 3×3 camp that saw significant participation from collegiate players. “The progress and competitive spirit I’ve seen in such a short period have been outstanding,” Rizzotti concluded, highlighting the growth and enthusiasm surrounding the sport.

With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, the USA Basketball 3×3 team is poised to make a significant impact, building on their historic success and continuing to elevate the profile of 3×3 basketball on the world stage.
