American Idol viewers were treated to an unexpected moment during Monday night’s live show as judge Katy Perry experienced a wardrobe malfunction. Perry, clad in a custom Kate Barton silver metallic top, encountered a wardrobe malfunction while applauding contestant Roman Collins’ rendition of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”
Perry took the incident in stride, quipping at the judges’ table, “That song broke my top off. I guess it is a woman’s world.” Fellow judge Luke Bryan joined in on the humor, joking, “Ratings! Here we come, ratings!” in reference to the incident potentially boosting viewership.
However, judge Lionel Richie playfully pointed the finger at Bryan for the wardrobe malfunction. According to Richie, Bryan accidentally knocked the top off and then spent the rest of the time apologizing and trying to fix it, albeit unsuccessfully.
Perry later clarified that the mishap was not a malfunction but rather a “moment for television.” She explained, “Every season it seems I rip my pants… I think it’s the physical comedy, the physical expression side of me that just wants to burst at the seams.”

Despite the unexpected turn of events, Perry maintained her composure, even humorously requesting tools like pliers or a towel to assist in the situation. Luke Bryan made an attempt to help but ultimately added to the light-hearted nature of the incident.
This season marks Katy Perry’s final one as a judge on American Idol, as she announced her departure earlier this year. American Idol airs Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the next day.
