House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has initiated an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. McCarthy cited a “culture of corruption” in the Biden family investigations.
The White House calls it “extreme politics.” An impeachment inquiry investigates potential wrongdoing by federal officials, but it doesn’t guarantee impeachment. To impeach, the House needs a majority vote on at least one charge. McCarthy emphasizes oversight rather than impeachment as the goal.
House Republicans, led by Rep. James Comer, obtained financial records for the claim. The impeachment inquiry, led by Comer, Jim Jordan, and Jason Smith, might not require a House vote. There’s no set timeline for the inquiry, which could last from months to a year.
If enough evidence is found, articles of impeachment would go to the House floor for a majority vote. Then, it moves to the Senate, where a two-thirds majority vote is needed for conviction. However, conviction seems unlikely with Democrats holding a majority.
