Charlotte Hornets Head Coach Steve Clifford has announced that he will step down from his position at the end of the season, citing the demanding nature of the 82-game NBA schedule and the team’s recent struggles.

“The demands of an 82-game season are immense, and this year has been particularly challenging,” Clifford explained to The Associated Press. “The combination of the rigorous schedule and the disappointments on the court have taken a toll on me.”

The Hornets have faced difficulties this season, currently holding a record of 18-57. Clifford’s tenure with the team over the past two seasons has been marked by a combined record of 45-112, highlighting the challenges he has faced as head coach.

“It’s hard to ignore the impact of the losses over the past couple of years,” Clifford admitted. “The toll it takes, both physically and mentally, is significant. I reached a point this season where it became overwhelming, and I felt I needed a break from coaching.”

While Clifford did not disclose any specific health concerns that influenced his decision, it is worth noting that he previously took a leave of absence during his first stint with the Hornets in 2017 due to health reasons.

Despite the team’s struggles, Clifford remains optimistic about the Hornets’ future, pointing to the talent and potential of players like Brandon Miller and LaMelo Ball.

“The core is there,” Clifford affirmed. “There are talented players on this team who have shown what they are capable of.”

Injuries have been a significant factor in the team’s struggles, with key players, including Ball, missing significant time on the court.

Clifford, who boasts a career record of 337-457 as a head coach, holds the record for the most wins by a head coach in Hornets history, with 241 victories during his tenure.

The Hornets’ front office has expressed their respect for Clifford’s decision and their commitment to finding a replacement who aligns with their vision for the team’s future. The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Clifford’s departure marks the second major change under new owners Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, following Mitch Kupchak’s resignation as general manager earlier in the season. Jeff Peterson has since been named as Kupchak’s replacement, and he has praised Clifford’s contributions to the team.
