Introspective USA-born producer WMD released his latest single ‘Yearn’ on the 9th of December via Natural Blonde. The single premiered on CLASH Magazine and is taken from his forthcoming album Deliquesce, which will be released on vinyl and digital platforms in early 2023, and follows the previously released track ‘Nowhere’, which earned early support from Notion Magazine, adding to the artist’s press support. WMD has previously appeared in industry publication EARMILK as well as the Seattle-based media outlet Maheen The Globe, among others, helping him grow his total stream count to 42 million across platforms.

WMD has previously performed at The Crocodile in Seattle, where Electronic duo Plaid headlined, appeared on the VICE television series States of Undress as well as Epicly LAter’d, and has been featured on YouTube channels Fluidified and Inspira. Inspired by LCD Soundsystem, Baths, and Evenings, Erickson taps into Chillwave, Downtempo, and even Folk to create music comparable to Novo Amor, Tycho, and Firewoodisland.

Born in Cashmere, Washington, based in Seattle, Washington, USA,  Michael Erickson, better known as WMD, is an Electronic music producer who creates lush, airy records that thrum with the power of melancholia, the ache of nostalgia, and the sorrow of relationships. Learning to produce at a young age, he fell in love with the internet chiptune scene but grew to produce complex and emotional music.

“Yearn” (2022)

Lost in a misty backdrop, WMD’s single ‘Yearn’ laments. Ephemeral textures light up the composition while broken piano notes accentuate its sorrowful spirit. Drenched in reverb, each pluck of the guitar feels vulnerable, exposing the weight of WMD’s emotions. With many to convey, he has stitched them together in a raw, four-minute-long collage of feeling.

Allowing us into his creative process, WMD says this: “This song was written over the course of three months in the winter of last year. I was doing a lot of travelling with only a small digital recorder and a cassette deck, which led to me capturing a lot of little snippets of audio in the downtime between drives. I wanted to write a song that was a tapestry of sounds from those recordings. The track is the result of combining over 70 different cassette and digital personal recordings and splicing them together with some added guitar and vocal overdubs.”
