Shakira, a three-time GRAMMY winner and Golden Globe-nominated artist, recently shared a candid reflection on her musical journey, revealing that even with her remarkable success, she’s had moments of cringe-worthy self-assessment when revisiting her past work.

During a conversation with Hot Ones host Sean Evans, Shakira explained what aspects of her earlier music make her wince. The discussion was prompted by her comment to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that she “used to suck,” a statement she later softened, attributing it to her artistic evolution.

The singer highlighted her vocal style as a significant point of evolution, noting that she believed she had previously “overdone” certain vocal elements, particularly the signature cry in her voice that was prominent in her 2001 hit, “Whenever, Wherever.” Shakira expressed that she feels her voice has matured, becoming thicker and more rounded, reflecting her personal growth and evolving artistry.

Currently, Shakira is in the spotlight promoting her first studio album in nearly seven years, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women No Longer Cry). The album release follows her recent separation from soccer superstar Gerard Piqué, with whom she shares two sons, Milan and Sasha.

Despite the personal challenges she’s faced, Shakira remains grateful for the unwavering support of her fans. Last year, at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, Shakira spoke about the profound impact her fans have had on her life, particularly during difficult times.

“I never thought really that my fans could sustain me and could be there for me in so many ways, you know?” Shakira shared. “I think that if it wasn’t because of them, I would’ve probably been a lot sadder, but they really gave me a lot to fight for and they’re just so loyal.”

Shakira’s honesty about her past self-criticism and her appreciation for her fans’ support serve as a testament to her resilience and growth as an artist and a person.
