In a stunning display of skill and dominance, Jared McCain of Duke University made history in the NCAA Tournament game against James Madison, setting a new record for the Blue Devils with eight 3-pointers. McCain’s 30-point performance, with 22 points scored in the first half alone, propelled Duke to a resounding 93-55 victory, ending James Madison’s dream season.

From the opening moments of the game, McCain signaled his intent with a quick 3-pointer, setting the tone for the rest of the match. “I feel like every game, I’m always ready to see if I’m going to go off,” McCain remarked, showcasing his confidence and readiness for the game.

Duke’s victory not only secured their spot in the Sweet 16 but also ended James Madison’s 14-game winning streak, highlighting the Blue Devils’ dominance throughout the match. Despite JMU’s strong defensive efforts, McCain’s early success from beyond the arc created opportunities for Duke’s offense to flourish.

Coach Mark Byington of James Madison praised Duke as a “tremendous basketball team,” acknowledging their superior performance. The loss marked the end of an exceptional season for JMU, which achieved a program record for victories.

Looking ahead, the focus for James Madison shifts to the future of Coach Byington, who was previously considered for a coaching position at West Virginia. Despite the loss, players like Edwards, who led the Dukes with 13 points, expressed gratitude for their experience with the team.

McCain’s record-breaking performance was a highlight of the game, with his eighth 3-pointer setting a new standard for Duke. His stellar shooting, coupled with strong performances from teammates like Filipowski and Proctor, propelled Duke to a decisive victory.

Coach Jon Scheyer, in his second season as head coach, expressed satisfaction with Duke’s offensive performance, highlighting improvements made since their previous losses. With Duke’s entry into the Sweet 16, Scheyer continues his successful transition from player to coach, adding another milestone to his career.

The game also highlighted the success of the North Carolina “Triangle” region, with Duke, North Carolina, and North Carolina State all advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015. Duke’s victory, combined with the success of their regional rivals, underscores the strength of basketball in the region.

Despite facing early adversity with guard Jeremy Roach’s injury, Duke overcame challenges to secure a dominant victory. Roach’s resilience, playing through a dislocated finger, exemplified Duke’s determination and strength as they continue their journey in the NCAA Tournament.
