Bridge: Thank you for taking the time to chat with us Hannah! Let’s dive right in – tell our readers who you are and where you are from!
Hannah: Hi! Thank you so much for having me! I am a singer-songwriter and producer from Northern VA. I went to school for music in Boston and Berklee College of Music with a degree in songwriting.
Bridge: Would you say music has always been your main mode of expression?
Hannah: I began singing when I was about 2 years old with my grandmother. She taught me to sing folk songs with her and harmonize. My dad has also always played music with me, he is an amazing guitarist. I have always relied on music as my form of expression, ever since I was very young. I feel that music gives me the tools to express everything that I feel.
Bridge: We have found that all artists are different. What does the songwriting process look like for you?
Hannah: Songwriting, to me, is an amazingly cathartic process that leaves me feeling so fulfilled afterwards. I often start with a bassline or progression and top-line over it. I “mumble-sing” a melody and the first words that come to mind I sing and begin to form a story or lyric.
Bridge: Let’s go back a little. How has your past, your family or upbringing or education, affected the music you’re making today?
Hannah: I have been so fortunate to have people in my life that both love/are musicians and family members who support me every step of the way. My parents paved the way for me to be able to take lessons and be involved in musicals. Without them, I know that I would be half the musician I am now. Their help and love affected me and my music.
Bridge: What do you want people to take away from your music?
Hannah: I want people to see that I am unafraid to say what I feel strongly. I am not the type of person to change my opinion simply because it is unliked or uncommon. I am who I am and if you are unhappy with that, then I am not the person for you.
Bridge: Which artists would you say inspire you the most?
Hannah: I am so inspired by Fletcher, Elley Duhe, Rihanna, Sasha Sloan, P!nk, and women like them. They are so strong, unapologetic, and honest. That is what I aim for my music to feel like.
Bridge: And the last question…If you had to pick any song to be the soundtrack of your life what would it be?
Hannah: I would absolutely choose “Just Like Fire” by P!nk.
