On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday evening, the 47-50th Street subway station near Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan transformed into an unexpected concert venue. Green Day, the renowned pop-punk band, alongside Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s “Tonight Show,” delivered an electrifying performance to the delight of unsuspecting commuters.
The event commenced around 8 p.m., with Fallon and Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool initially donning disguises, complete with fake beards. They began their set with a cover of “I Feel Like Making Love” by Bad Company. However, the ruse was short-lived as Fallon soon unveiled his true identity and introduced the band.
The group performed several of their hit songs, including “Basket Case” and “American Idiot,” as well as a rendition of Kiss’s “Rock and Roll All Nite.” The station quickly filled with a mix of regular commuters and fans who had learned about the secret gig. Enthusiasm surged through the crowd, with many singing along, jumping, and capturing the moment on their cellphones.
The scene was captured by Post editor Mark Lungariello, who happened upon the performance while leaving his newsroom. The footage was later shared on X. Interestingly, this unique subway performance was not featured on that Wednesday’s “Tonight Show” episode, and it remains uncertain when it will be broadcasted.
Green Day is gearing up for their upcoming tour alongside fellow 90s rock legends The Smashing Pumpkins. This appearance comes just ahead of the release of their 14th studio album, titled “Saviors,” set to debut on Friday. This impromptu subway concert not only provided a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the attendees but also marked a significant moment in the band’s ongoing journey in the music world.
